Station overview

Facilities

Kensington is located at the northern end of the Macaulay Road level crossing, with station access from Macaulay Road and Eastwood Street.

The station consists of two side platforms; Platform 1 has a large red brick building, while platform 2 has a smaller red brick building. A large Metcard ticket vending machine is located at the entrance to platform 1, able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins. A coin-only Metcard ticket vending machine is located at the entrance to platform 2. Myki ticket vending machines are located at the entrances to platform 1 and platform 2.

A signal box is located at the Flinders Street end of the station, as well a siding, used for the nearby grain silos.[1]

Special services to Flemington Racecourse and Showgrounds stations run though the station, but do not stop for passengers with signs on the platform advising customers of the fact.

History

Kensington station opened on 1 November 1860 as part of the private Melbourne and Essendon Railway Company line to Essendon. The station closed with the line in 1864 until it was reopened in 1871 under government ownership.[2] The Melbourne bound station building was constructed in 1886, as was the signal box beside the Kensington Road level crossing. The gates at the crossing were replaced by boom barriers in 1966.[3]
